   SHBS College Fair

The CAS session on the afternoon of May 29, 2023, saw the college fair held on the campus of SHBS.

Those who joined the fair included 13 universities or colleges from US, UK, Canada, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Australia and Chinese mainland and 2 well-known agencies. Among those universities and colleges, there were not only state universities, but also liberal arts colleges, as well as art colleges and other private universities.

By referring to the list of questions provided by the College Advising Department, students interacted with the admission officers from different colleges, collected information, gained a thorough understanding of these colleges, made in-depth comparisons among them, and analyzed whether a college suited them or not. This college fair can help students better understand which factors to consider when exploring a college, what qualities college admissions officers are trying to seek for in students, and can inspire students to think over how they will grow up and develop.

I talked to the admission officer from Bard College and learned a lot. Located in the suburbs not far from the city, the campus of Bard College is quiet and safe. Students have many opportunities to work as interns. When it came to the ethos of the college, the admission officer told us eloquently that a student with initiative and self-efficacy would be a better candidate to apply for the college. They offer little job-related training because liberal arts colleges placed more emphasis on education itself than on job hunting, which is non-educational. He mentioned that many students study biology, chemistry and psychology as undergraduates and then rely on their solid knowledge foundation to apply for a medical school, which confirmed what I had predicted about a liberal arts college. Maybe we should turn away from the purely employment-oriented perspective and think more deeply about the big questions in our life. Nowadays, with the increasingly rapid development of science and technology, the advancements of various new subjects seem to make people a little overwhelmed. Therefore, in the age full of tools, the ability to think independently is particularly important. In the era of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence, we should retain the desire and curiosity to learn, which can be like a rope to tie us up so as not to keep feeling disappointed and falling down.

At the college fair, I called on and talked with the admissions officers from Northeastern University, UC Riverside, Bard College, and the University of Glasgow. I found out that those colleges are all geographically well-located, so students can have many opportunities to work as interns. After talking to the admission officers, I learned that US universities pay more attention to the overall development of students, rather than just the grades themselves. By contrast, I was most interested in Northeastern University. Located in Boston, it has been a cooperative partner with many enterprises. Students may benefit from its CO-OP program, one of its advantageous internship programs, and it is easier to find a job working as an intern and to accumulate work experience. By exploring at the college fair, I came to realize my own goals. In my application season to come, I will do more self-exploration, try further to find out what I want, and to present myself in as many ways as possible.

At a time when applying for colleges in multiple countries has become a popular choice, the diversified college fair organized by our school has provided us with more choices. I focused on exploring the University of Glasgow. Located in Scotland and with a history of 500 years, the University of Glasgow is known as a comprehensive, influential and time-honored university in the UK. Its four-year school system is consistent with that of most countries, and it offers a complete range of majors. Although the University of Glasgow has a long history, it keeps pace with the times. Geographically well-located, it boasts a rich environment where we can enjoy the unique local customs of the UK, appreciate the wonderful music and landscape, and live and study at ease. The university also has a well-stocked library and experienced professors, and offers honors programs and dual degree programs for outstanding students. Its philosophy of striking a balance between work and rest deeply attracts me, and has made me think more about college application.

The College Advising department will organize more college fairs on campus and online sessions with admission officers so as to provide students with more opportunities to broaden their horizon, spark their critical thinking and to help them grow up and apply for colleges.
