毕业生故事2-林Jared(首图).jpg

Editor's note: Jared Lin, a 12th grader of SHBS, received offers from Tulane University, the University of Toronto, and other prestigious universities.

Teachers are very pleased with how Jared has grown up and improved himself in the past few years. As a confident, determined and calm boy, he now knows where to go and he dares to imagine his bright future. What is the secret to the fact that he has grown confident and stronger? The answer: the power of being seen. The school has seen the uniqueness of each kid and has customized a class schedule for each kid so that they can better build on their strengths and thus have more time to participate in activities and explore what they like. The school understands each kid and supports them in their efforts to achieve in the areas they are interested in, so that they can gradually discover their value and build their confidence and thinking power. We believe that students and parents will draw inspiration from Jared’s story.

Jared's Account

When I was a 9th grader at a public school, I was overwhelmed by the pressure resulting from studying for the high school entrance exams, and I came to realize that the traditional way of learning, like taking the high school and college entrance exams, was not suitable for me. Later, recommended by my uncle, I chose to leave Xiamen, my hometown, for SHBS in pursuit of freedom. Looking back now, I am really glad that I made the decision. The biggest difference between private and public schools is curricular arrangement and flexibility. I was able to choose my courses based on my self-understanding, my preference for certain types of subjects, and my preferred time-management. This helped me maximize my academic strengths, allowing me to study and improve subjects that I was interested in or good at, and also giving me more freedom and flexibility for time-management. Of course, the school college counselors helped my a lot by giving me advice based on my own circumstances.

Of course, the difference between the two kinds of education experience lies not only in the choice of courses, but also in the fact that SHBS is willing to dedicate more time and energy to encouraging me to do what I like to do. I think this is very important because the school not only helped me improve my ability to explore on my own so that I came to know what I really liked and what I would do in the future through step-by-step exploration, but also changed my personality. These two things have helped me to get to where I am now. I like soccer, or to be precise, I am even obsessed with it. Although there is no professional soccer field, there are many big lawns on campus. At first, two or three of my best friends and I would play soccer on the big lawn every day. We first made a goal with 4 water bottles, then we found that the water bottles collapsed easily on the potholed grassland, so we replaced them with four pieces of clothing. In this way, we had a lot of fun playing on our DIY soccer field. This unique "field" soon attracted many spectators, and more and more boys joined us, and from that moment on, the idea of forming a soccer team representing SHBS occurred to me. In my 10th grade, I shared my idea with the school, which approved my application right away in support of our participation in sporting events. In addition, the school purchased two goals, had workers trim the weeds and level the lawn. After that, the number of our team members grew from 5 to 22, which really boosted my self-confidence. Then, we trained on our own every afternoon without the help of any coach and contacted other international schools to play friendly matches in our spare time. Not only did we train on our own, but we also got very good results in the mataches. Knowing this, the school was very happy to present us an S-club award and scholarship in the 11th grade. During that time, I not only improved my leadership skills and added some edge to the qualifications of my college application, but I also explored my interests and became aware of what I really loved. The “victory” of the soccer team boosted my confidence and made me feel like I could be a leader one day and that I could do great things. That confidence benefited me academically as well. My GPA improved from 2.9 at the beginning to 3.5, 3.8, an even to straight A at the end of last semester, and this upward trend reflected the positive impact the school made on the students by actively encouraging them to participate in the activities they are interested in.

When the application season started in the second half of my 11th grade, facing the stress resulting from college application, I was confused and anxious almost every day. I was overwhelmed by choosing from colleges, taking off-campus standardized tests, and writing piles of paperwork ....... Fortunately, my HR teacher, the school's college counselors, and Chris, the foreign principal, kept in close touch with me and gave me advice on what and when to do next for my application. When they had time, they often talk with me one-on-one to discuss my college application and help ease my tension. I gradually became less and less nervous and even felt relaxed while applying for my college.
