SHBS Science and Art Fair

On May 23, 2025, the latest Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan High School’s Science and Art Exhibition took place as scheduled. This year’s exhibition brought together a wealth of students’ and teachers’ explorations in the fields of science and art, showcasing the breadth of thought, depth of practice, and diversity of expression.

The science section featured a vast range of academic experiments, covering six major fields: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, and computer science. All projects were independently researched by the students.

Chemistry and Biology

化学与生物领域 包含“鲁米诺发光实验”、“碘钟反应”、“DNA 凝胶电泳分析”;

Students presented experiments like the “Luminol,” “Iodine Clock,” and “Gel Electrophoresis and DNA  Analysis.”

Interdisciplinary Projects

Projects such as “Cavendish’s Experiment,” “MBTI Analysis,” and “Economic Forecasting Report” sparked in-depth discussions.

Engineering and Data Analysis

Exhibits like the “Super Excavator” and “Cycling Statistics Survey.”

Traditional Wisdom and Modern Technology:

“Hearing Math” and “Abacus Wisdom.”

Many exhibits demonstrated the seamless fusion of science and art:

• “磁悬浮小火车”通过光影轨道呈现动力学美感;

The “Maglev Train” highlighted the beauty of dynamics through light and shadow on the tracks.

• “自制熔岩灯”将流体力学转化为视觉艺术;

The “Homemade Lava Lamp” transformed fluid mechanics into visual art.

• “天气瓶”用晶体生长演绎气象的诗意表达;

The “Weather Bottle” poetically expressed weather phenomena through crystal growth.

The “3D Tin Foil Art” and “Plasma Jet” created a stunning space aesthetic.

Visitors to the exhibition were invited to participate in fun interactive activities, such as:

• 在“热物理传感器与自动化烤棉花糖”展位体验温度控制的甜蜜实验;

Experiencing temperature control in the “Thermal Physics Sensor and Automated Marshmallow Roasting” exhibit.

• 通过“纸杯直升机”测试空气动力学设计;

Testing aerodynamic designs with the “Paper Cup Helicopter.”

• 用“二段式水火箭”完成压力与动能的即时转化;

Observing instantaneous pressure and kinetic energy transformation with the “Two-Stage Water Rocket.”

Engaging in game theory and biology crossover in the “Social Board Game - ADC Carrier Tree.”

Although the overall preparation and display were a success, there were areas for improvement and future prospects. Some students found it challenging to grasp the complexity and difficulty of their projects, which meant they didn’t dedicate enough time and effort. They look forward to refining their projects for future exhibitions.

The art section of the exhibition also featured stunning works. Students from the Fine Art and Material Art classes showcased their creations, including cloisonné enamel, clay coil pottery, fluid art, moss texture paintings, acrylic paintings, 3D tin foil art, and collage works made from yarn, as well as photography. Students and teachers also had the opportunity to create their own lacquered fans, where they experienced the charm of traditional craftsmanship and the joy of handmade creations through water ripple textures and fan designs.

Science is never limited to textbooks, and art originates from life’s perceptions. Here, students use curiosity as their starting point and practice as their path. They transform knowledge into works of art and turn thoughts into expressions. Each exhibit marks a stop along their journey of growth.

Interview with Davy Zhu:

Q: In guiding students in their project selection for the science exhibition, how did you help them integrate rational exploration with the exhibition theme “Everything Has Reason”?

A: I believe the core of science education lies in fostering students’ ability to think rationally. The successful organization of this science fair was the result of the collective effort of all the science teachers.

During the topic selection phase, we organized all the science teachers to guide students in identifying research topics from everyday life phenomena. We found that scientific truths often differ from common perceptions. For instance, the widely held belief that “heavier objects fall faster” was disproven by scientific validation, where students found that objects of different weights fall at the same speed.

Through organizing this science exhibition, our primary goal was to teach students how to use logical thinking to analyze, think through, and draw conclusions. In this process, students gradually learn to distinguish between common misconceptions and scientific theories, which is the very reason we chose “Everything Has Reason” as the theme.
