To uphold the reputation of a nation of etiquette, we presented a cultural exploration tour of Nanjing and Suzhou!
In Nanjing, Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum—hailed as “the first mausoleum in China's modern architectural history”—marked the first stop on our cultural journey. The school thoughtfully provided Spanish-speaking guides to help our Spanish friends fully immerse themselves in the experience. Along the Qinhuai River, where dazzling lights reflect upon the water and neon silhouettes dance along the banks, we were filled with awe and wonder.
In Suzhou, attractions like the Tiger Hill Temple, Suzhou Gardens, and the Pagoda of Yunyan Temple left us captivated and reluctant to leave. At Hanshan Temple, after learning about Chinese religious beliefs and Buddhism, discussions erupted between the two groups of students. They pondered why different countries and regions have entirely distinct faiths, why people worldwide seek religion, and what religion ultimately offers us. This sparked a cultural brainstorming session highlighting the vast differences between the two nations.
Through days of interaction and exchange between our students and their Spanish peers, they gained insight into the differences within their respective cultures. Gradually, they came to understand the distinct cultural needs of each, moving from recognizing cultural diversity toward embracing the common humanity that unites us all.
