The afternoon of February 17th saw the presentation of SHBS electives for this new semester. SHBS faculty team are so talented to offer as many as 54 electives for their students, providing the students with abundant opportunities to explore and discover themselves.
Humanities & Arts Courses
First, there are History at the Movies, Chinese Philosophy, Selected Reading of Chinese Classic Books, Chinese Painting, Chinese Calligraphy & Painting, Seal Carving, Ceremics, Original English Musical and other humanities and arts courses. Ms. Rita's class combines history with movies, even making students who are not quite interested in history excited and ready to take their first steps into the world of history. Mr. Tony Wang's Chinese Philosophy course is devoted to the study of "The Book of Changes", a Chinese treasure, and in-depth exploration of traditional Chinese culture. In this course, students are encouraged to express themselves and feel the crystallization of Chinese wisdom. Ms. Jang's ceremics course guides the students to learn about the history of ceramic art and create their own pottery. In those electives, teachers use fun ways to help students broaden their horizons, increase their knowledge, help them experience and enjoy different cultures, and cultivate their humanistic and artistic competence.
Language & Social Studies
Then, there are some language and social studies courses, such as psychology, Japanese, French, Public Speaking, and Global Energy and Climate Policy, etc.. Ms. Yu's French elective and Ms. Ma's Japanese elective provide students with an opportunity to learn French and Japanese and experience French or Japanese culture. Ms. Liz's Little Britain elective helps students learn more about modern British language, culture, history, and media, and help students pick up some British accent if they are interested. Mr. George's Public Speaking course provides students with a speaking training camp where they can learn the art and skills of speaking to different audiences in different situations.
Life-skill courses are also very interesting. Video Editing, Bakery, Flower Arrangement, Special Effects Production, Animation Production... Under the guidance of the teachers, students can explore their interests and develop new practical skills. Ms. Grace's Bakery elective is very popular every semester. In this course, students can not only learn baking skills but also improve their cooking skills. Photograhy club established by Hanxiao, one of the seniors, is also very popular. The school also supports Hanxiao to set up a photography elective this semester.
Sports electives allow students who love sports to have more opportunites to explore themselves. In addition to the school's regular PE courses (basketball, tennis, badminton, golf, taekwondo, tai chi, yoga, rowing), there are also Chinese dance, three section cudgel, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and other sports. The teachers ’ presentation and demonstration made all the students eager to try.
Academic Courses & Contests
In addition, the school also offers academic courses and contests such as AMC Math Contest, Physics Bowl, NEC(National Economics Challenge), ACSL(American Computer Science League), SRCC Robotics, etc., to encourage students to participate in academic contests and provide professional guidance for them.
After the elective presentation session, the students felt both excited and torn, since they can only choose one from all those interesting and practical courses to participate in. I wish all students can choose the courses they like the best and enjoy their exploration in the fields they are interested in.
