Educational Practice and Reflection

from Subject Teacher to Manager

At Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan School, Mr. Wang Wei wears multiple hats: a dual-subject teacher of politics and Chinese, a dedicated frontline educator focused on student moral development, an assistant principal supporting school growth, and a guiding force coordinating signature programs while conveying the warmth of education. While others may perceive this as “complex,” he views it as a symbiotic and enriching interplay—a harmonious balance of opposing forces. Recently, we engaged in an in-depth conversation with Mr. Wang Wei, unlocking his perspective on the convergence of education, teaching, and administration, and exploring the unique pedagogical wisdom of Hongrun Boyuan.

Education as Integration:

The Symbiosis of Yin and Yang

"Many people think my roles are diverse and my tasks are complex, but in fact, they are mutually nourishing and interconnected," Mr. Wang Wei explains, using the concept of "Yin and Yang" from the Dao De Jing to describe his educational practice. To him, teaching politics and Chinese are not separate but complementary: "I interpret texts from a philosophical perspective and understand politics from a literary angle, which allows me to provide students with a more comprehensive cognitive dimension."

Moral Education and Teaching:

Seeing the "Person" to Teach the "Book" Well

As a teacher with a background in ideological and political education, he has been deeply involved in politics teaching for many years. During his eight years of teaching Chinese, he has reinterpreted the political discipline from the perspectives of literature and philosophy. Meanwhile, the underlying logic and value core of the political discipline have added a layer of ideological depth to his Chinese classes. "Teaching Chinese has deepened my understanding of the humanistic essence of politics, and teaching politics has clarified the value orientation of Chinese. The integration of the two subjects enables students to understand texts and the world from different perspectives."

In his view, moral education and teaching are an inseparable whole. "The core of teaching is to educate people, and moral education helps us see the real needs of students as independent individuals." Only by being deeply rooted in moral education can one accurately grasp the deep-seated demands of students and parents, and integrate the educational goals into every class, allowing knowledge transmission and value guidance to resonate in harmony. "The classroom is the main battlefield of moral education. The integration of education and teaching can truly touch the hearts of students in every class."

The Light of Moral Education:

Monday Assemblies, Opening a New Chapter of Growth

Every Monday, Mr. Wang Wei can be found in the Hongrun Boyuan auditorium. The ten-minute assembly, free of empty preaching, is carefully designed to support students' growth.

"Monday assemblies are the 'valve' that helps students transition from leisure to study," he says. The core of the assembly is to help students establish a sense of ritual for the start of a new week, guiding them to plan for the week and adjust their mental state. At the same time, it clearly conveys the tasks and growth directions of the stage, allowing students to gain the strength to move forward in both practical arrangements and spiritual guidance. "Sometimes, the silent state of mind is more powerful than spoken words. I hope to inspire each student to start the new week with a positive attitude through my own state."

Joint Elective Course:

The Intersection of Humanities and Sciences, Exploring the Wisdom of Daoism

The elective course on Daoist culture jointly offered by Mr. Wang Wei and Mr. Xie Bo is a pioneering initiative at Hongrun Boyuan. One is deeply involved in the humanities, and the other in the sciences. The cross-disciplinary collaboration of the two teachers makes the abstract Daoist thought tangible and understandable.

"The thoughts of Laozi and Zhuangzi are inherently integrated. We hope to convey the root wisdom of Chinese culture through different approaches," Mr. Wang Wei and Mr. Xie Bo both chose to "transform the abstract into the concrete," using real-life examples such as driving and basketball to allow students to first experience, then understand, and finally reflect. "Education has a lag. What we do now is to plant the seeds of culture in students. Perhaps they only understand a little now, but in the future, when they encounter difficulties and need guidance, these seeds will take root and grow, becoming their confidence to understand the world and solve problems."

Public Welfare Salon:

Creating an Educational "Showroom" and Building a Window for Growth

The public welfare salon is a platform created by Mr. Wang Wei to showcase educational models and provide a window for students' growth. Through this salon, he shares educational experiences and insights, aiming to inspire and support students in their personal and academic development. This initiative not only enriches the educational environment of the school but also fosters a community of learning and growth.

From sharing school practices to inviting students as guests, the public welfare salon has become an important platform for showcasing, training and discovering students. "Students are much more capable of expressing themselves and speaking than we imagine. This stage has given them confidence and also allowed educators to see the depth of youthful thoughts."

To Young Teachers:

Delve Deep into Your Specialties and Dare to Take on Responsibilities

Teacher Wang Wei offered sincere and specific advice to young teachers: First, delve deeply into your specialties, and through repetition and accumulation, develop an educational style that is warm and thoughtful, becoming an "expert" with your own understanding. Second, be courageous and take on various tasks, integrating resources and achieving growth in practice. He used his experience of founding the public welfare salon as an example and frankly said, "Many times, opportunities are hidden in responsibilities. If I had refused because of being busy back then, there wouldn't have been the subsequent influence and gains." He encouraged young teachers to be more proactive and have a bit of "small ambition", firmly believing that the compounding effect of education lies in continuous deepening and bold attempts. Only in this way can they keep working hard in the fertile soil of education and grow towards the sun.

From classroom teaching to moral education guidance, from characteristic courses to public welfare salons, Teacher Wang Wei, with the wisdom of "the interplay of yin and yang is the way", is writing a story of coexistence and growth in education at Hongrun Boyuan. And this is precisely the educational microcosm of Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan School: Empowering growth through multi-faceted integration, nourishing the soul with cultural roots, and enabling every student to become a thoughtful, warm-hearted, and responsible young person of the times in the education that combines the best of Chinese and Western traditions.
