////////

When AI Can Generate Dreams,

Where Should Our Education Head?

【A Record of the AI Specialized Training

 at Hongrun Boyuan School

at the Start of the School Year】

////////

On February 27, 2026, to welcome the new semester and to find the right anchor point for education in the AI wave, the school specially invited Mr. Pan Pengkai, a Ph.D. in AI from MIT and a serial entrepreneur, to bring a thought-provoking discussion on "Educational Transformation in the AI Era" to all the faculty and staff.

PART.01

From MIT to Hongrun Boyuan

Dr. Pan Pengkai has many shining labels: a Ph.D. in AI from MIT, the founder of the early "collaborative filtering" algorithm (which is the ancestor of all current video recommendation systems), the founder of seven companies, and the father of a pair of children admitted to Harvard, MIT, and Princeton.

Today, he is not here as an entrepreneur, but as an educational thinker and a father, discussing with the teachers of SHBS: In this era when AI is about to be omnipotent, what should we do for our children?

AI is not a chatbot;

it is a learning artificial brain.

>>>

At the beginning of the lecture, Dr. Pan corrected the common misunderstanding about AI. "AI is not a steamed bun, not a simple ChatGPT, and not a chatbot," he said, showing a video generated by AI that was extremely realistic. "Look at this video. The reflections on the ground, the texture of the clothes, the movements of the characters... We humans couldn't even dream up such a detailed picture. When I saw this video, I felt that AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) has arrived."

He pointed out that the core ability of AI is prediction. The human brain has only 20 watts of power and ages with time; while the computing power of AI is almost unlimited. It can learn and master patterns from massive amounts of information and make predictions and creations beyond imagination.

The Joys and Worries of the AI Era: Energy Freedom and "Brain Atrophy"

>>>

Facing the teachers listening intently below, Dr. Pan raised the huge changes and hidden concerns brought by AI:

Opportunities (Joy): The future might be an era of energy freedom, with nuclear fusion technology potentially breaking through with the assistance of AI; human lifespan could be extended to 120 years or even longer.

Challenges (Worries): "Do you know how long the average Chinese resident works each day? 3.6 hours. But the time spent on mobile phones is 5.6 hours." Dr. Pan, an early researcher of recommendation algorithms, candidly pointed out the harms:

Addiction and social substitution: 18% of American teenagers have already stated that their first "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" was an AI.

Alienation of parent-child relationships: Children no longer listen to their parents because they feel that AI "understands" them better.

Outsourcing of thinking ability: "Your brain is like your muscle; if you don't use it, it will atrophy." If everything is asked of AI, children will lose their creative thinking.

Create with AI, not consume it

>>>

In the face of these challenges, Dr. Pan shared his practice in the AI era - using AI to assist children in college applications and personal growth."Our pain point is that either we know nothing or there is too much information and we don't know what's true," Dr. Pan introduced his AI agent, which provides personalized path planning for students by studying over one million application cases.

He demonstrated on the spot how to use AI to generate a "Future Me" video for students: If a child wants to learn about music technology, AI will generate a day in the life of a future music producer. If a child wants to learn about robots, AI will generate the life of an engineer debugging a mechanical arm in a laboratory. "A fifteen or sixteen-year-old child doesn't know what they want. Reasoning with them is of no use. But AI is like a dream-making machine, allowing them to 'see' their future selves, and their intrinsic motivation will naturally arise."

PART.02

The shining moment of a student from

Hongrun Boyuan: At 16, in just two weeks,

an attempt to change the world

During the lecture, Dr. Pan particularly mentioned a case that thrilled the entire audience - Sammy, a student from the 11th grade of Hongrun Boyuan.

In an AI + Design summer workshop organized by Dr. Pan, Sammy discovered that the biggest pain point for high school students is actually time management. Under the guidance of a professor from MIT (the inventor of the "ThinkPad red dot"), Sammy built his own time management AI assistant in just two weeks using AI tools.

Not only did he finish the code, but he also wrote a paper and made a presentation. Dr. Pan couldn't hide his surprise. "Among Sammy's classmates, seven or eight out of ten have developed their own AI applications within two weeks. Some kids made applications to help blind students attend classes, and some made sensors to detect soil quality."

This is "learning" in the AI era: identifying problems, leveraging AI, and solving them quickly. These 16-year-olds are achieving results with AI that Dr. Pan couldn't even reach during his doctoral studies.

Message to SHBS: Be the "pilot" in the AI era, not the "passenger"

At the end of the lecture, Dr. Pan gave sincere advice to the teachers of Hongrun Boyuan:

Draw the red line: "Support fully what AI helps create; firmly oppose what AI helps consume (such as aimlessly watching short videos or having AI do homework for you). Teach children how to use AI correctly just as you teach them how to use fire and knives."

Embrace "learning by doing": When every child can use AI to create their own works, these works are no longer "homework" but their "Profile" (personal portfolio). Children with intrinsic motivation are those who are doing what they want to do.

Introduce AI general education: It is suggested that "AI literacy" education be launched as soon as possible to help children develop the ability to identify information cocoons and prevent mental outsourcing.

PART.03

Shaping the Future of Education with AI

Forty years ago, the future was predicted; today, forty years later, we are in the midst of a torrent of change. Through this training, Hongrun Boyuan School not only enabled teachers to understand the underlying logic of AI, but also to see the path for cultivating future talents. As Dr. Pan said, "When our children can transform from 'consumers' who are constantly on their phones to 'developers' who use AI to create value, education will truly achieve a leap forward."

After the training, the teachers were still in high spirits and surrounded Dr. Pan to discuss how to integrate AI agents into daily teaching management. The video about Sammy became the focus of the teachers' attention, and they all vied to watch it. The creativity of the students at Hongrun Boyuan is being recognized by this era.

In the new semester, SHBS is ready to dance with AI and teach for the future.
