03  Capture the Flag

The SHBS International Orientation Camp is a program that every new student must take part in. Its purpose is to ensure that before the official start of the school year, all students can become familiar with the campus, teachers, and curriculum system, as well as get to know one another and build friendships, making it easier to integrate and transition smoothly once classes begin. On the very first day, through the camp rules orientation, English ice-breaking session, and the evening student leadership showcase, students already started to get acquainted. The following two days of team-building activities would help them deepen understanding, strengthen bonds, and forge lasting friendships—an essential part of the Experience Camp design.

01 Ice-Breaking Activities

Right after the morning assembly on the 22nd, several energetic foreign coaches from UME, dressed in camp uniforms, were already waiting for us at the Arts Plaza. Together with our homeroom teachers, they led us to the school’s air-dome gymnasium for a series of ice-breaking activities. From group huddles, Rock-Paper-Scissors King, and team relays to formation challenges that required listening and quick responses, each game brought us closer. Teams were constantly reshuffled, and coaches had us shout team names and chants with great enthusiasm. The lively atmosphere melted away shyness, and everyone opened up with confidence.

02 Gaga Ball

After ice-breaking, the coaches divided us into three groups for a round of Gaga Ball, with difficulty increasing each round. Players crowded into a small pit, aiming to strike opponents below the knees with the ball to eliminate them. The fast-paced matches were full of tension and excitement, punctuated by bursts of cheers and laughter.

03 Capture the Flag

Next came Capture the Flag, a popular game in the U.S. Two teams competed, each with its own base and “jail” for captured players. The game tested teamwork, strategy, courage, and speed. The field was alive with running, chasing, shouts, and laughter. Though exhausting, everyone threw themselves into the game with joy.

04 Nominations

At the end of the morning, the coaches gathered us in a circle to reflect on each other’s strengths shown during the activities. Students nominated peers who best embodied Service, Perseverance, Respect, Patience, and Friendship, sharing the reasons for their choices. Those recognized received bracelets representing the corresponding values. The process not only deepened friendships but also strengthened our collective spirit.

05 Archery

In the gentle afternoon breeze, we tried our hands at archery. After a brief introduction to the basics, students took turns shooting. Some even seemed to channel Katniss Everdeen’s skill, striking directly into the bullseye.

06 Kayaking

At sunset, the lake shimmered under the glow of the evening sky, reflecting the laughter and joy of students paddling in pairs. Canoes chased one another across the water in a spirited yet lighthearted scene. Occasionally, a group was “caught” and had to pause, waiting for rescue. During one rescue attempt, a boat capsized, sending two students into the water. Initially, they swam toward the shore, but under the calm guidance of the coach, they returned to their kayak—showing composure and teamwork that deserved praise.

07 Talent Show

As night fell, the long-anticipated talent show began. One by one, students took the stage, showcasing their creativity—through songs, dances, and other performances. During the singing acts, the audience spontaneously lit up their flashlights, creating a sea of twinkling lights that swayed with the music. The warmth and joy of the moment, mingled with laughter and applause, made the night unforgettable.

08 Survival Bracelets

On the following day, coaches taught us how to craft survival bracelets. With just a cord and a clasp, we wove what is called a “tinder bracelet.” Beautiful and unique, it also carries great practical value: in the wilderness, it can be quickly unraveled to start a fire. As we focused intently on our weaving, it felt as though we were braiding a symbol of safety and protection to wear at all times.

Conclusion

In short, these few days were filled with joy and growth. We had fun, made new friends, got to know our teachers, and became more familiar with the rhythm and spirit of the school. Looking ahead, we hope to continue living in harmony, resolving conflicts with understanding, and strengthening our friendships through cooperation. May our journey of learning at SHBS become ever smoother. Finally, we sincerely thank the school for its thoughtful planning, and the UME coaches for their patient guidance and support.
